On World Youth Skills Day, the focus shifts from the conventional model of studying, earning a degree, and entering the workforce to a more dynamic and interconnected approach. The key to career readiness, experts say, lies in continuous learning, workplace exposure, and the development of transferable skills, rather than solely relying on academic qualifications.

One of the most significant changes is the recognition that employability is a shared responsibility. Shantanu Rooj, Founder and CEO of TeamLease EdTech, emphasizes that "employability has to be co-created by universities, employers, and learning partners." This means that internships, apprenticeships, live projects, and work-integrated education are becoming increasingly important. The question employers are asking is no longer just about the degree, but also about a candidate's ability to communicate, solve problems, take ownership, learn quickly, and apply knowledge in a real-world setting.

The skills gap, Rooj argues, is not necessarily about graduates not knowing enough, but rather about a lack of opportunities to apply their knowledge. This is where the rapid adoption of AI plays a crucial role. AI is transforming learning from a periodic activity into a continuous workplace habit. As 92% of Indian knowledge workers already use AI at work, employees need to be adept at experimenting with new tools, verifying outputs, and combining AI with human judgment.

However, as AI takes over routine tasks, human skills are becoming even more valuable. Amit Goyal, Managing Director of Project Management Institute (PMI) South Asia, highlights the importance of collaboration, leading through change, strategic thinking, and delivering meaningful outcomes. This changing balance between technical expertise and human skills is prompting higher education institutions to rethink their approach to preparing students for work.

For colleges, the challenge is no longer just teaching technical knowledge. Dr. Manujata Gupta, Assistant Professor of Business Communication at Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), emphasizes that a degree is the starting point of a learning journey, not the finish line. While universities are introducing courses on AI, data analytics, and emerging technologies, the curricula alone cannot keep pace with the speed of workplace change. Instead, colleges should focus on building transferable skills such as communication, critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, and the ability to 'learn, unlearn, and relearn'.

The most valuable qualification for young people entering the workforce today may not be a single degree or certification, but the ability to keep learning throughout their careers. As industries evolve and careers become less linear, skilling can no longer be viewed as something that ends with graduation. In an AI-driven economy, education is a lifelong process, and the ability to adapt and learn continuously is the key to success.
