Morocco's economy may be booming, but the allure of Europe remains strong for its young people, particularly those living in rural areas. This paradoxical situation raises a deeper question about the state of social mobility and opportunities in the country. While Morocco's economy is growing, with a 5% increase in 2025, the persistent pull of Europe is rooted in a crisis of confidence in the future and the ability of institutions to guarantee adequate social protection and equal opportunity. This is particularly evident among the young, who are facing high levels of unemployment and limited opportunities for social mobility. The image of a European El Dorado remains very strong in Morocco, with social media playing a key role in amplifying this perception. Many young Moroccans, including those with relatively acceptable socio-economic situations, are risking their lives to reach Spain, often after abruptly quitting their jobs. This suggests a deeper frustration with the lack of opportunities and a desire for a better life. The mass crossing attempts are a sign of a crisis of confidence in the future and the ability of institutions to provide adequate social protection and equal opportunity. From my perspective, this situation highlights the need for a more inclusive and equitable approach to economic development and social mobility in Morocco. The country needs to address the deep inequalities between urban and rural areas and provide more opportunities for young people to express their frustrations, defend their rights, and take part in the building of their society. Only then can Morocco truly realize its potential and provide a better future for its young people.
